Cable theft investigation in Newark
Arrest following infrastructure cable theft in Newark
According to an article published by the BBC on 3 March 2026, a 35-year-old man has been arrested in the Newark area following the theft of 1,700 metres of cable from under the A617 road. Nottinghamshire Police reported that officers on patrol near Kelham observed several vehicles fleeing the scene shortly after midnight on Sunday.
Following a search of the area, authorities located two vehicles believed to be involved in the incident. One vehicle was found abandoned containing manhole lifting tools, while the second vehicle was discovered nearby with a suspect inside. Police confirmed that items found within the second vehicle had been stolen from a Newark address two days prior.
The BBC reports that this incident follows a recent spate of high-value copper cable thefts in the region. Police have emphasized that the methods used to extract this cabling are dangerous and can result in significant power outages. Two other men, aged 40 and 48, were also arrested on 17 February in connection with separate cable theft investigations.
Businesses are encouraged to secure all infrastructure access points and report any suspicious activity near utility sites immediately.
