California Attorney General Charges Eight in Complex Nationwide Auto Theft Ring

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, alongside the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), announced on October 23, 2025, that the state has filed felony charges against eight individuals accused of operating a sophisticated nationwide auto theft ring. The investigation revealed that the suspects acquired high-value stolen vehicles from various states across the U.S. and brought them to the San Francisco Bay Area.

To disguise the origin of the stolen vehicles, the defendants allegedly altered the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and re-registered the cars through the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles. This process effectively washed the titles, allowing them to sell the vehicles as legitimate cars through a licensed Bay Area car dealership. The ring is linked to the theft of at least 19 vehicles with a total value exceeding $800,000.

The criminal complaint filed in Alameda County Superior Court includes 40 felony charges, including conspiracy, grand theft auto, possession of stolen property, and selling vehicles with altered VINs. The prosecution is being handled by the California Department of Justice's Special Prosecutions Section.
