Cambridge Man Jailed for Stealing Rare Coins Worth Over £50,000 in Double Heist
CAMBRIDGE, UK — A 35-year-old local man has been jailed after executing a targeted double burglary at a specialist coin dealership in Cambridge, making off with rare coins valued at more than £50,000.
Joseph Ross, of Darwin Court, Cambridge, was sentenced to prison in April 2025 following his arrest and subsequent guilty plea. The court detailed how Ross and an accomplice targeted the Cambridge Coins business on Swan Road during an audacious series of break-ins on February 24, 2025.
The first break-in occurred during the early hours of the morning, when the burglars shattered a window to gain entry. During this initial raid, they made off with rare collectable coins valued at approximately £40,000, leaving empty display cases behind. In an extraordinary turn of events, the culprits returned to the business later that same day to execute a second break-in, this time stealing a secure safe containing silver coins valued at an additional £10,000.
Cambridgeshire Police launched an immediate investigation and arrested Ross the day after the break-ins. A search of his address in Darwin Court led to the recovery of several of the stolen rare coins and discarded display casings, linking him directly to the crime.
In addition to the burglary charges, Ross admitted to several unrelated counts of shoplifting groceries. Two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the heist. Police officers expressed satisfaction with the sentencing, noting that the double burglary had threatened the livelihood of a specialized local dealer.
