Casino Winner Followed Home and Robbed at Gunpoint in Irvine Driveway

A resident of Irvine, California, was the victim of a terrifying "follow-home" robbery after visiting the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles County. The incident has highlighted a dangerous regional trend where criminals target high-stakes casino players, shadowing them to their suburban residences before ambushing them for cash and valuables.

Ambushed in the Driveway

The victim, whose identity has not been released, departed the Commerce Casino late in the evening. Unbeknownst to him, a vehicle containing several suspects trailed him for over 30 miles back to his residence in Irvine. As the victim parked and stepped out of his car in his own driveway, the suspects quickly pulled up and confronted him. Holding the victim at gunpoint, the robbers demanded his winnings, personal belongings, and cash before speeding away into the night. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain physical injuries during the brief but high-stress encounter.

Link to Organized Robbery Crews

Irvine Police Department detectives, working in conjunction with neighboring agencies, quickly launched an investigation. Within days, authorities identified a known robbery crew suspected of executing multiple follow-home robberies across Southern California. Investigators also linked the crew to a robbery at a local 7-Eleven store in Irvine. Members of the crew were arrested and scheduled for court appearances in late January 2024.

A Broader Pattern of Casino Targeting

Federal indictments unsealed in recent months have exposed the scale of these casino follow-home operations. Crews often place spotters inside casinos to monitor tables, identifying individuals who win large sums of money or carry substantial amounts of chips. The spotters then coordinate with armed associates outside to follow the victims to their homes, sometimes spanning multiple counties. Police advise casino patrons to remain highly vigilant of their surroundings and to contact law enforcement immediately if they suspect they are being followed.
