Arson and burglary at Ripley charity shop
According to the Derbytelegraph, a man has been sentenced to six years in prison following a burglary and arson attack at The Childrenโs Society charity shop in Oxford Street, Ripley. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 2 December 2025.
Derbytelegraph reports that the perpetrator, Michael Gibson, broke into the premises and started a fire, which destroyed donations and presents intended for struggling children. The blaze forced the evacuation of a residential flat located above the shop due to smoke infiltration. Following the incident, police apprehended Gibson, who was found in possession of stolen items, including bracelets and a money tin. CCTV footage also confirmed his presence at the scene.
The shop, which has served the community for 40 years, suffered significant damage but has since reopened following support from local businesses. Gibson, 49, of Fletcher Street, Ripley, pleaded guilty to charges of arson, burglary, and racially aggravated harassment. He was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on 2 June 2026.
Business owners are encouraged to install monitored fire and intruder alarm systems to ensure early detection of unauthorized entry or smoke.
