Chicago Officer Fires Weapon After Being Struck by Fleeing Car During Irving Park Burglary

CHICAGO, IL — A responding Chicago police officer fired their weapon during a chaotic confrontation early Thursday morning, after being struck by a vehicle driven by fleeing burglary suspects in the Irving Park neighborhood.

According to police officials, officers responded to a burglary call at a retail store in the 4000 block of West Irving Park Road around 3:00 a.m. As officers arrived and attempted to block the suspects' escape route, the burglars got into a vehicle and drove directly at the responding police.

One officer was hit by the fleeing vehicle. During the collision, the officer discharged their service weapon toward the suspect vehicle. The suspects managed to drive away from the scene and remain at large, authorities said.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. It remains unclear if any of the suspects were struck by the officer's gunfire. Detectives are investigating the store burglary and the aggravated battery of the police officer.
