Chicago Police Issue Warning After Burglar Infiltrates Garfield Park Businesses via Air Ducts

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert warning local business owners in the East Garfield Park neighborhood of an unusual burglary tactic. Authorities report that a burglar has been gaining access to commercial properties by climbing through roof-mounted air conditioning and ventilation ducts.

According to police reports, the suspect successfully targeted at least two businesses in the area by bypassing standard security doors and windows. The offender climbed onto the roofs of the buildings, dismantled or squeezed through the ventilation infrastructure, and dropped into the retail space below. Once inside, the burglar targeted cash registers, safes, and high-value inventory before making an escape.

CPD is advising business owners to inspect their building exteriors, particularly roofs and ventilation systems, and secure them with security grates or motion-activated alarms. Investigators are reviewing building security footage and working to identify the individual responsible for these targeted break-ins. Residents and merchants who notice suspicious rooftop activity are urged to contact emergency services immediately.
