Co-op Store Targeted in Dramatic Ram-Raid and Cash Machine Theft in Sutton
A local Co-op convenience store in Sutton has become the target of a destructive ram-raid, resulting in the theft of an on-site cash machine (ATM). The incident, which took place in the early hours, has left the shopfront heavily damaged and prompted a significant police response.
According to initial reports and witness accounts, a vehicle was deliberately driven into the front entrance of the retail premises. The force of the impact shattered the glass frontage, compromised the security shutters, and allowed the perpetrators to access the interior. Once inside, the gang quickly secured the cash machine before loading it onto a waiting getaway vehicle and fleeing the scene.
Metropolitan Police officers were called to the location following the activation of the store's intruder alarms. Upon arrival, officers established a secure cordon around the building to allow forensic teams to examine the site for trace evidence, including tire tracks and potential DNA matches. CCTV footage from the store and surrounding streets is currently being reviewed in an attempt to identify the vehicles and individuals involved in the planning and execution of the raid.
A spokesperson for the Co-op expressed relief that no staff members were present or injured during the incident, while condemning the disruption caused to the local community. The store is expected to remain closed for several days to undergo structural repairs and safety assessments. Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or captured dashcam footage in the area around 15:00 or in the preceding hours to contact investigators immediately.
