According to Leicestermercury, a café owner in Hinckley has been left disheartened following a distraction burglary at his business, Stottie Shop. The incident occurred on Friday, May 29, 2026, when two young girls entered the premises claiming to be deaf and at risk of homelessness.

Leicestermercury reports that the individuals sought donations from the staff. While the owner was distracted by the request, the tip jar was removed from the counter. The theft was only discovered on Sunday, May 31, when a customer attempted to leave a tip. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, the owner confirmed the theft took place while he was attempting to provide financial assistance to the girls.

Leicestershire Police have confirmed that enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Authorities have requested that anyone with information regarding the event contact them, citing reference number 26*316808. The business owner has since shared the footage to warn other local stores and residents of the potential risk posed by these individuals.

Business owners are advised to remain vigilant and keep cash containers secured or out of reach when interacting with unknown visitors.
