Elderly Burglar Sentenced to Seven Years for Stealing Safe from Betty Rae's Ice Cream
KANSAS CITY, Mo. โ An elderly Kansas City man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for breaking into a popular local dessert shop and stealing its safe, an incident that was captured on high-definition surveillance cameras.
A Jackson County judge handed down the sentence on Monday, May 19, 2025, to 78-year-old John Heckman. Heckman had previously entered guilty pleas to charges of second-degree burglary and first-degree property damage in connection with the late-night break-in at Betty Rae's Ice Cream, located in the historic River Market district.
Caught on Camera
The burglary occurred during the early morning hours of October 13, 2024. Security footage from the business showed Heckman using a large rock to shatter the glass front door of the shop. Once inside, he located and removed the establishment's safe, which contained approximately $1,800 in cash receipts.
The surveillance video was widely shared on social media and broadcast by local news outlets, leading to tips from the public that helped KCPD detectives identify Heckman. In addition to the stolen cash, the business owners reported they incurred $1,700 in repair bills for the shattered door and spent $2,000 to replace the safe and repair damaged flooring.
A Hard Sentence for a Local Landmark
Betty Raeโs Ice Cream is a beloved Kansas City institution, and the burglary generated significant community outrage and support for the business. During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution argued that Heckmanโs extensive criminal history warranted a substantial prison term despite his advanced age.
โBusiness owners in our community work tirelessly, and crimes like this threaten their livelihoods,โ the prosecution said in a statement. In addition to his prison sentence, Heckman has been ordered to pay full restitution to Betty Rae's Ice Cream for the stolen cash and property damages.
