Evidence found in trash helps catch man accused of firing shot at Tampa clerk during robbery: DOJ
TAMPA, FL โ A federal investigation has led to the arrest and indictment of a Tampa man accused of firing a gunshot at a convenience store clerk during an armed robbery. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), crucial evidence discovered in a nearby trash receptacle played a key role in identifying and apprehending the suspect.
The incident occurred during an armed robbery at a local business, where the suspect allegedly brandished a firearm and demanded money. During the confrontation, the suspect discharged the weapon, narrowly missing the store clerk. The clerk was unharmed but deeply traumatized by the violence of the encounter.
Following the robbery, Tampa Police and federal agents processed the scene and canvassed the surrounding area. Investigators discovered discarded clothing and items matching the description of the suspect inside a trash bin a short distance from the store. Forensic analysis, including DNA testing and fingerprint recovery from the recovered trash evidence, linked the suspect directly to the crime.
The Department of Justice confirmed that the suspect now faces federal charges of armed robbery and brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence in federal prison.
