Falmouth Man Charged in Two Cape Cod Home Invasions and Violent Assault
A Cape Cod community is breathing a sigh of relief following the arrest of a local man linked to a string of terrifying home invasions. Neil O'Flaherty, 27, of Falmouth, Massachusetts, is currently facing a litany of severe charges after authorities connected him to two separate break-ins, one of which involved a violent assault and kidnapping.
Violent Home Invasion in Falmouth
The first incident occurred on the night of May 25 at a residence on Austin Stokes Drive in Falmouth. According to police reports, an intruder gained entry to the home by forcing his way through a bedroom window. Once inside, he violently assaulted a resident, who was over the age of 60, and held them against their will.
The terrifying ordeal was interrupted when a second resident heard the commotion and approached the bedroom. Startled, the suspect fled the scene through the same window he used to enter. Despite an extensive search of the surrounding area involving K9 teams and drone units, police were initially unable to locate the perpetrator, who was completely unknown to the victims.
Second Break-In Leads to Arrest
The case broke wide open this past Monday when police responded to another reported break-in, this time on Wheeler Road in neighboring Mashpee. Shortly after the crime was reported, officers located O'Flaherty in the vicinity of Currier Road and Ashumet Road in Falmouth.
The Mashpee Police Department arrested O'Flaherty in connection with the Wheeler Road incident. He was arraigned in Falmouth District Court and subsequently released. However, as the investigation deepened, Falmouth detectives gathered enough evidence to decisively link him to the violent May 25 home invasion on Austin Stokes Drive.
Severe Charges and Court Proceedings
On Thursday, O'Flaherty was taken back into police custody. He has been charged with a disturbing list of felonies, including:
- Aggravated Burglary
- Kidnapping
- Assault with Intent to Murder
- Assault and Battery on a Person Aged 60 or Older
- Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime for a Felony
Following his arraignment on Thursday in Falmouth District Court, a judge ordered O'Flaherty to be sent to Bridgewater State Hospital, where he will undergo evaluation pending a dangerousness hearing.
