Investigation continues into Whaley Bridge burglary

According to the BBC, a complex police investigation is ongoing one year after a fatal shooting occurred during a residential burglary in Whaley Bridge. Derbyshire Police were called to Eccles Road in the early hours of 1 May 2024 following reports of a burglary.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 19-year-old Marcus Smith with fatal gunshot wounds, while a second teenager was found nearby with a gunshot injury. A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Additionally, three other individuals aged 19, 21, and 31 were arrested in connection with the burglary. All suspects currently remain on bail.

Det Chief Insp Claudia Musson stated that the force is working to build a file for the Crown Prosecution Service, noting that investigations of this nature are complex and rely on expert evidence. Another teenager, initially arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, has been released without charge. Authorities continue to focus on a thorough investigation into the incident.
