Gold Coast Market Target of Second Smash-and-Grab in Two Weeks
CHICAGO, IL โ For the second time in a fortnight, the Gold Coast Market on the Near North Side has been targeted by smash-and-grab burglars, highlighting a frustrating pattern of repeat commercial break-ins in the upscale neighborhood.
Chicago police responded to the retail establishment early Tuesday morning following reports of an active alarm. Upon arrival, officers discovered shattered glass storefronts and signs of a rapid ransacking of the premises.
A Pattern of Recurring Break-ins
The previous burglary, which occurred just two weeks prior, involved a similar modus operandi. In both cases, a group of individuals arrived in multiple vehicles, broke the front glass window, and quickly grabbed high-value retail merchandise before fleeing prior to police arrival.
โIt is extremely disheartening to be hit twice in such a short period,โ said a neighborhood resident. โThe business owners here work hard to serve the Gold Coast community, and seeing this level of repeat damage is deeply concerning for everyone.โ
Calls for Stricter Security and Enforcement
The double break-in has sparked calls from local business associations for enhanced security patrols, stronger physical barriers like bollards, and more aggressive prosecution of smash-and-grab offenders. The Gold Coast area, known for its high-end shopping and dining, has seen an uptick in retail theft incidents over the past year.
Detectives are reviewing security camera footage from both occurrences to determine if the same crew is responsible. They are also looking into whether the vehicles used in the escapes were reported stolen.
