Group raided Staten Island Railway facilities, stole keys, tools, police say; 2 charged

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. โ€” Authorities have arrested and charged two individuals following a break-in at Staten Island Railway (SIR) facilities, where a group of trespassers allegedly stole keys and various tools, according to police reports.

The Security Breach at Transit Facilities

The incident occurred when a group of unauthorized individuals managed to breach the perimeter of the Staten Island Railway maintenance and storage facilities. Once inside the restricted property, members of the group targeted secure storage areas, successfully obtaining facility keys and specialized transit tools used for maintenance operations. The unauthorized access prompted a rapid response from security personnel and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Police Department.

Arrests and Criminal Charges Filed

Following a swift investigation aided by surveillance footage and transit security alerts, police apprehended two suspects linked to the break-in. The individuals, whose identities have not been fully disclosed due to ongoing investigations into the other members of the group, face charges including burglary, criminal trespass, and grand larceny. Authorities are continuing their search for the remaining suspects who fled the scene before police arrived.

Impact on Railway Operations and Safety Concerns

While the theft of keys and tools raised immediate security concerns for the Staten Island Railway network, officials confirmed that transit operations were not disrupted. The MTA has since initiated a comprehensive review of security protocols at all SIR yards and facility access points. Lock cylinders at the affected facilities are being replaced, and security patrols have been intensified to prevent future incursions into transit property. Transit officials emphasized that entering railway yards is not only illegal but extremely dangerous due to high-voltage equipment and moving trains.
