Fatal home invasion in Selby
According to an article published on 22 August 2025 by the Mirror, a resident of Selby, North Yorkshire, was involved in a fatal confrontation during a home invasion. A group of six intruders broke into the property and attacked the father of two with a crowbar in front of his family.
Mirror reports that the resident, in an act of self-defence, stabbed one of the intruders during the struggle. While the resident attempted to save the man's life by calling 999, the intruder was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. The remaining five burglars fled the property but were later apprehended and sentenced to a combined total of nearly 70 years in prison.
The resident faced no criminal charges, as authorities determined he acted under the legal principle of "reasonable force." According to the Mirror, British law allows individuals to use force they honestly and instinctively believe is necessary to protect themselves or others when a crime occurs within their home. The Crown Prosecution Service confirms that homeowners are not expected to make fine judgments regarding the level of force used during such high-pressure situations.
Ensure your home is secured with robust locks and alarm systems to deter potential intruders.
