How a 1970 New Orleans Equipment Theft Led Pink Floyd's David Gilmour to the Iconic Black Strat

In May 1970, during a tour stop in New Orleans, the legendary progressive rock band Pink Floyd suffered a devastating blow when their entire equipment truck was stolen, resulting in the loss of approximately $40,000 worth of gear. Among the items stolen was guitarist David Gilmour's primary setup, including his favorite guitars and custom equipment.

The New Orleans Heist

The band had recently arrived in New Orleans when thieves made off with the truck containing the group's essential touring gear. Gilmour later recalled the shock of the incident, stating, "The whole truck just disappeared, all our gear, gone!" Left without their instruments and facing scheduled performances, the band had to scramble to find replacements in local music shops.

The Birth of the Black Strat Legend

To replace his stolen gear, Gilmour visited Manny's Music in New York shortly after the incident, where he purchased a standard black Fender Stratocaster with a maple neck. This guitar, which would become famously known as the 'Black Strat', went on to be Gilmour's primary instrument for Pink Floyd's most iconic albums, including The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Decades later, the historic instrument was auctioned for a record-breaking $3.975 million, cementing its legacy as one of the most expensive and celebrated guitars in rock history.
