Intruder Jailed After Targeting Wrexham Special School in Disheartening Break-In

A special school in Wrexham has been left to pick up the pieces after an intruder broke in, causing significant disruption and stealing essential educational support equipment. St Christopher’s School, a dedicated facility supporting children and young people aged 6 to 19 with complex learning needs, was targeted in the early hours of Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Destruction and Theft of Special Needs Equipment

The burglar, later identified as 32-year-old Stephen Lee Jones, gained entry to the school by smashing a window. Once inside, Jones ransacked desks and office spaces, causing physical damage to the property. He stole an iPad and a specialized communication device belonging to a pupil with severe special educational needs. In addition to the valuable equipment, the intruder stole just £1.50 from a charity box and consumed food and drink stored in the school kitchen.

Forensic Breakthrough and Sentence

Forensic investigators from North Wales Police recovered blood stains left at the scene, which directly linked Jones to the burglary. Jones was arrested shortly thereafter and pleaded guilty to the school break-in, as well as a subsequent violent residential burglary later in December. On January 29, 2026, he was sentenced at Mold Crown Court to two years and eight months in prison.

Community Spirit Triumphs

Despite the disheartening nature of the crime, the school’s interim headteacher, Jeff Eggington, praised the resilience of the school community. He noted that operational disruption was kept to a minimum thanks to the swift, supportive response of parents, staff, and the pupils themselves. Local residents expressed outrage that a school dedicated to vulnerable children could be targeted in such a manner, but praised the police for their swift action in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
