Ongoing investigation into Whaley Bridge burglary

According to the BBC, an investigation remains ongoing one year after a fatal shooting occurred during a burglary in Whaley Bridge. Derbyshire Police were called to Eccles Road in the early hours of 1 May 2024, where they discovered 19-year-old Marcus Smith with fatal gunshot wounds and another teenager with a gunshot injury.

The BBC reports that a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Additionally, three other individuals aged 19, 21, and 31 were arrested in connection with the burglary. All suspects currently remain on bail as authorities work to build a case for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Detective Chief Inspector Claudia Musson stated that the investigation is complex and relies on expert evidence, requiring a thorough and proportionate approach. While a teenager previously arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released without charge, the police continue to work on the case.
