Irish Channel Store Clerk Stabbed in Head While Trying to Stop Shoplifter

NEW ORLEANS, La. — A retail store employee in the Irish Channel neighborhood was hospitalized after being stabbed during an encounter with a suspected shoplifter, the New Orleans Police Department reported.

The incident occurred on June 16, 2026. NOPD Sixth District officers responded to a call regarding a stabbing at a business. Investigators determined that a store clerk observed an individual attempting to leave the premises with unpaid merchandise. When the employee intervened in an attempt to stop the theft, a physical struggle ensued. During the struggle, the suspect produced a sharp weapon, stabbed the clerk in the head, and immediately fled the scene.

Emergency medical services arrived shortly thereafter and transported the victim to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Police have launched an investigation into the assault and are reviewing store security footage to positively identify the suspect.
