Lorain man killed by police following armed robbery, high speed chase identified
ELYRIA, Ohio โ The Lorain County Coroner's Office and local law enforcement have released the identity of the suspect who was shot and killed by police on Wednesday following a multi-city chase and hostage situation. The deceased has been identified as John Johnson, 37, of Lorain.
The incident began during the afternoon of January 21, 2026, when Elyria police officers responded to an armed robbery at an AT&T store on West River Road. Johnson allegedly held a Brinks armored truck driver at gunpoint, forced her into the back of the transport van, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Identification and Background
Following a high-speed pursuit that crossed through multiple cities, including Lorain and North Olmsted, police deployed spike strips on Brookpark Road to disable Johnson's vehicle. Johnson then fled on foot into the Clareshire Drive apartments in North Olmsted, where he held a mother and her four young children hostage at gunpoint.
An Elyria police officer entered the apartment and fired the fatal shot to protect the hostages. The Lorain County Coroner officially identified Johnson on Thursday morning, confirming he died of gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.
Ongoing Investigations
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is conducting an independent review of the shooting. The Elyria police officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure during officer-involved shootings. Representatives from BCI stated they are reviewing dashcam and bodycam footage, as well as interviewing witnesses, to construct a complete timeline of the events.
No civilian hostages or law enforcement officers suffered physical injuries during the armed robbery, pursuit, or subsequent standoff.
