Man Apprehended in New York After Allegedly Stealing $93,600 in ATM 'Jackpotting' Attack in Florence

FLORENCE, South Carolina — A suspect has been arrested in New York following a sophisticated ATM "jackpotting" operation in Florence, South Carolina, that resulted in the theft of $93,600, law enforcement officials reported.

"Jackpotting" is a high-tech crime where attackers use physical access or malware to force an automated teller machine to continuously dispense cash until it is empty. Investigators report that the suspect executed the exploit during the late night, collecting a massive sum of money before fleeing the region.

Following the crime, Florence police coordinated with federal agencies to track the movement of the suspect. The investigation led officers to New York, where local law enforcement and federal agents successfully apprehended the individual without incident.

The suspect is currently being held in New York awaiting extradition back to South Carolina to face multiple charges, including grand larceny and computer crime offences. Investigators are looking into whether he was working with an organized group specializing in bank machine exploits.
