Man charged with ‘smash and grab’ jewelry heist at Bloomington mall

BLOOMINGTON, Minnesota — A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a brazen "smash and grab" heist at a high-end jewelry store located inside a prominent shopping mall in Bloomington, Minnesota.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 21, 2025, during peak shopping hours. According to prosecutors, the suspect entered the jewelry store, brandished a heavy hammer, and began aggressively smashing glass display cases. He grabbed several valuable items of jewelry, including diamond rings and luxury watches, before fleeing through the mall's exit.

The loud, echoing sounds of shattering glass caused temporary panic among shoppers and mall employees, some of whom initially feared that shots had been fired. Security personnel and local police responded rapidly, securing the scene and clarifying that no firearms were involved. A short time later, officers located the suspect in a nearby parking lot and took him into custody without further incident. Most of the stolen merchandise was successfully recovered.

The suspect has been charged with felony theft, first-degree criminal damage to property, and possession of burglary tools. He is currently being held at the Hennepin County Jail pending his initial court appearance. Mall management praised the swift response of security staff and law enforcement in preventing injuries and resolving the situation quickly.
