Margate Police Investigate String of Copper Wire Thefts

MARGATE, FL — The Margate Police Department is warning local business owners and property managers about a series of copper wire thefts that occurred between May 13 and May 19, 2024. Investigators are seeking public assistance in identifying suspects targeting commercial HVAC systems and utility lines.

According to incident reports, perpetrators targeted several commercial properties during the late-night and early-morning hours. The suspects cut and stripped valuable copper wiring and piping from exterior air conditioning units, causing thousands of dollars in property damage and leaving multiple businesses without cooling. The thefts appear to target vulnerable units located at the rear of buildings or in poorly lit areas.

In response to these incidents, local authorities are recommending that property owners install protective steel cages around external HVAC systems, improve outdoor lighting, and ensure security cameras cover utility zones. The police are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses to identify any suspicious vehicles or individuals in the area during the week of the thefts.
