Ocean's Eleven-Style Sewer Heist: Gang Drills Into Rome's Luxury Bulgari Store for £400k Jewellery Loot
In a daring and meticulously planned heist reminiscent of Hollywood films, a gang of professional thieves waded through Rome's underground sewage network before drilling into the flagship Bulgari boutique located on the prestigious Via dei Condotti, escaping with luxury jewellery and watches valued at over €500,000 (£400,000).
The incident occurred during the dead of night on a Sunday. Investigative sources believe the group, consisting of three to five individuals, navigated several miles through the city's complex subterranean sewer pipelines to position themselves directly under the high-end retail shop. Equipped with a pneumatic hammer drill, the crew chipped away at the sewer ceiling until they breached the boutique's concrete flooring, creating a human-sized hole.
Upon entering the showroom, the intruders moved rapidly. They disabled security cameras and shattered glass display cases to snatch high-value items. During the raid, one of the perpetrators tripped a silent security alarm, alerting the monitoring agency. Although the Rome Flying Squad arrived at the scene in Condotti within seven minutes of the dispatch, the thieves barricaded the store's front doors from the inside, gaining an additional four minutes to flee back down the sewer hole.
Police are currently analyzing CCTV footage from adjacent commercial properties and tracking routes inside the sewer networks. A crowbar recovered at the crime scene has been sent for forensic analysis. Romolo Guasco, head of the local retailers' association Confcommercio, expressed deep concern over the security breach, calling for enhanced surveillance and preventive measures in the capital's luxury shopping district.
