Phoenix Homeowner Shoots and Kills Suspected Burglar in Central Neighborhood

PHOENIX, Arizona — An investigation is underway in central Phoenix after a homeowner shot and killed a suspected burglar early Sunday morning, July 13, 2025. The incident occurred at a residential property, prompting a large response from local law enforcement and emergency medical services.

Attempted Home Invasion Ends in Fatality

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to a shooting call at approximately 3:00 AM. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suspect inside the home suffering from gunshot wounds. The homeowner reported that he was awakened by noises indicating someone was trying to break into the residence. When confronted, an altercation ensued, and the homeowner, fearing for his safety, discharged his firearm, striking the intruder.

First responders performed life-saving measures on the suspect, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The homeowner was unharmed during the confrontation and is currently cooperating fully with investigators.

Self-Defense and Ongoing Investigation

Detectives have been interviewing neighbors and collecting forensic evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events. Preliminary findings suggest the suspect was armed and entered the home by force. In Arizona, the "Castle Doctrine" allows residents to use physical and deadly force against unlawful intruders to defend themselves and their families inside their homes.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner at this stage. A Phoenix Police spokesperson stated that a final report will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete, which is standard procedure in all self-defense shooting incidents.
