Police Clamp Down on Commercial Crime in Derry as Burglary and Attempted Theft Investigations Continue
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has intensified its investigations into commercial crimes in Derry following two separate business-related incidents in the city, leading to arrests and public appeals.
Orchard Street Attempted Theft and Assault
In late January 2026, police responded to a report of an attempted theft at a retail outlet in the Orchard Street area of Derry city centre. Two suspects, aged 25 and 29, allegedly attempted to steal a quantity of clothing from the store. During the incident, a staff member who intervened was assaulted. Thanks to the swift response of local officers, both men were apprehended, arrested, and subsequently charged with attempted theft and assault. They are scheduled to appear before the Derry Magistrates' Court.
Commercial Burglary Appeal
In a separate and later incident in mid-March, detectives issued a public appeal for information regarding a burglary at commercial premises. Overnight, entry was gained to the business, causing concern among local traders. Police are investigating the full extent of the intrusion and whether any property was taken. They have urged business owners to review their security footage and report any suspicious behavior around the area.
A PSNI spokesperson highlighted the impact of these offenses on the local business community: "Business crime is not victimless. It impacts staff safety and local livelihoods. We remain committed to working with businesses to deter and detect these crimes." Anyone with information is asked to contact the non-emergency number 101, or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
