Police Detail Modus Operandi of South American Crime Ring

UNITED STATES — Law enforcement officials have disclosed detailed insights into the methods used by a sophisticated South American crime ring targeting affluent residential neighborhoods for high-value burglaries. The revelation comes following a series of arrests and a multi-jurisdictional investigation into the network's activities.

According to police reports, members of the theft ring, often referred to by investigators as part of a 'burglary tourism' phenomenon, enter the country on temporary visas or through visa waiver programs. Once inside the United States, they lease rental vehicles and set up temporary bases to coordinate targeted break-ins in wealthy suburbs.

The group's modus operandi involves meticulous planning, including using online real estate listings and mapping software to identify target homes backed by wooded areas or golf courses. They also employ advanced technology, such as Wi-Fi jammers to disable home security cameras and alarms, and carry out surveillance to monitor the residents' schedules.

“These are highly organized, professional thieves who operate in teams of three or four,” a lead investigator explained. “One member acts as a scout or lookout, while others break in through second-story windows or master bedroom doors, which are less likely to have sensors. They focus exclusively on safes, designer jewelry, high-end watches, and cash.”

Police departments across the country are advising homeowners to implement multi-layered security measures, such as hardwired security systems, motion-activated exterior lighting, and heavy-duty safes bolted to the floor. Authorities are also working with federal agencies to address the international aspects of the crime ring.
