Police Investigating Attempted $50,000 Invoice Fraud Scheme at Northeast Georgia Food Bank

ATHENS, GA โ€” The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia was recently targeted in an attempted theft of nearly $50,000 through a sophisticated business invoice fraud scheme, prompting an investigation by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

According to police reports, employees at the food bank discovered a fraudulent invoice submitted to their accounting department requesting a payment of $49,955. The invoice claimed to be for "executive business coaching and development services," which the nonprofit organization had never requested or received.

Upon closer inspection, food bank staff recognized the billing was suspicious and contacted law enforcement. Investigators revealed that the fraudulent document utilized the names of legitimate businesses and individuals without their knowledge or authorization. Furthermore, the W-9 tax form attached to the invoice listed a mailing address associated with an entirely different corporate entity.

Thanks to the vigilance of the food bank's administrative team, the fraudulent payment was flagged and halted before any funds were transferred. A spokesperson for the nonprofit expressed relief, noting that a loss of that scale would have directly impacted their ability to provide food assistance to families in need across the region.

At this time, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made. Athens-Clarke County police detectives are working alongside financial crime investigators to trace the source of the email and the fraudulent bank account details provided. Businesses and local non-profits are being urged to double-check all incoming payment requests and verify vendor details to prevent falling victim to similar invoice redirection schemes.
