Police Object to Rotherham Shop's Alcohol Licence Request Citing Crime Concerns
ROTHERHAM, South Yorkshire — Police have formally lodged an objection to an alcohol licence application submitted by a local convenience shop, citing ongoing concerns about crime, disorder, and public safety in the surrounding area.
The shop, located in a busy district of Rotherham, had applied for permission to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises. However, local police licensing officers have stepped in, submitting a detailed dossier to the local council's licensing sub-committee outlining why the application should be refused.
Concerns Over Anti-Social Behavior
According to reports submitted by South Yorkshire Police, the area where the shop operates is already designated as a hotspot for anti-social behavior and public nuisance. Officers argue that granting another alcohol licence would exacerbate these existing issues, making it harder to police the neighborhood and protect local residents.
"Our primary duty is to ensure public safety and prevent crime and disorder. Introducing another source of off-sales alcohol in this specific location is highly likely to fuel anti-social behavior and increase the burden on local policing resources." — South Yorkshire Police Licensing Representative
Licensing Committee Decision Pending
The objection will now be reviewed by the Rotherham Council licensing sub-committee. The owner of the shop has argued that the business would implement strict age-verification schemes and install high-definition CCTV to mitigate any potential issues. A final decision on whether to grant or deny the alcohol licence will be reached following a formal hearing in the coming weeks, where both the business owners and police representatives will present their cases.
