Prolific Burglar Robert Rust Sentenced to 23 Months After Cambridge Spree

CAMBRIDGE, UK — A prolific burglar who caused widespread misery to local business owners and residents across Cambridge has been jailed for nearly two years after admitting to a series of commercial break-ins and thefts.

Robert Rust, a repeat offender with a history of 55 convictions for 125 offences, was sentenced to 23 months in prison at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, August 9, 2024. The sentencing follows a major crime spree that occurred throughout March and April 2024.

The court heard that the spree commenced on March 2, 2024, when Rust broke into the B&Q retail store on Newmarket Road in Cambridge. Once inside, he stole high-value power tools, including an angle grinder and an electronic screwdriver. His crime campaign did not stop there; Rust went on to target several other establishments, including a cafe, a barbershop, a local Co-Op, and even Addenbrooke’s Hospital, stealing items ranging from cash to electronic devices.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary officers arrested Rust following an extensive investigation that linked him to the break-ins using CCTV footage and forensic evidence left at the scenes.

In sentencing Rust, the judge highlighted the severe financial and emotional impact his actions had on small business owners in the community. Police spokespersons welcomed the custodial sentence, stating that it takes a highly disruptive, prolific thief off the streets and provides much-needed relief to local retailers.
