Pub landlord fights off knife-wielding burglars in Sunderland

Burglary at the Welcome Tavern in Sunderland

According to an article published on 5 March 2026 by Chroniclelive, a pub landlord in Sunderland was forced to defend his business during a violent burglary. Geoff Moon, who has operated the Welcome Tavern in Hendon for over 30 years, was confronted in the early hours of Monday, 2 March, by two masked intruders armed with knives.

Chroniclelive reports that the suspects forced entry into the premises and demanded access to a safe. Mr. Moon resisted the intruders, resulting in a physical altercation during which he sustained stab wounds to his head, arms, and hands. The burglars eventually fled the scene without obtaining any money. Northumbria Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for information regarding the burglary on Prospect Road.

Business owners are encouraged to ensure that all entry points are reinforced and that alarm systems are regularly tested to deter unauthorized access.
