Radford Burglary Suspect Charged After Police Officer Strangled During Arrest
A 57-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged and remanded in custody following a residential burglary in Radford and a subsequent violent assault on a police officer who was attempting to arrest him.
The incident began on the evening of Sunday, 12 April 2026, when the owner of a flat located on Ilkeston Road returned home to find their property had been broken into. Several items of value were reported missing, including a watch, designer trainers, various items of clothing, and perfume.
Violent Confrontation in Local Shop
Following a rapid investigation by Nottinghamshire Police officers, a suspect was identified. The next day, on Monday, 13 April 2026, officers located the suspect inside a local retail premises and moved in to detain him. However, the suspect violently resisted arrest.
During the struggle, a police constable was struck in the face and grabbed by the throat, suffering intentional strangulation before the suspect was successfully subdued and taken into custody.
Charges and Court Appearances
The suspect, identified as Michael Roberts, was subsequently charged with three offences:
- Burglary
- Intentional strangulation
- Assaulting an emergency worker
Roberts made his initial appearance at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 14 April 2026. He has been remanded in custody to next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 12 May 2026.
"No police officer or any emergency worker for that matter should have to put up with being assaulted while doing their job," said Detective Chief Inspector Claire Gould of Nottinghamshire Police. "The PC in question during this incident was strangled and hit in the face while making an arrest. This level of violence is completely unacceptable and will never be tolerated by Nottinghamshire Police."
