Ram raid attempt at Co-op store in Newtown St Boswells

Attempted ATM theft in Newtown St Boswells

According to Dailyrecord, an investigation is underway following a failed ram raid at a Co-op supermarket in Newtown St Boswells. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 7 October 2025.

Police Scotland reported that they were alerted to the scene at approximately 4:05am following an alarm activation. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a Land Rover had been driven into the storefront in an attempt to remove the business's ATM. While the vehicle caused significant structural damage, including a partial ceiling collapse, the perpetrators were unsuccessful in their attempt to steal the machine.

The store remains temporarily closed while authorities conduct their investigation and assess the building for repairs. A Co-op spokesperson confirmed the attempted theft and stated that the company is working to reopen the premises as soon as possible. Police have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. Local community members have since organized to distribute food items that were otherwise unable to be sold due to the closure.

Business owners are encouraged to review their security measures, including the installation of reinforced bollards to protect storefronts and ATMs from vehicle-based intrusions.
