Residential burglary and assault in East Belfast

Residential burglary in East Belfast

According to an article published on 30 April 2026 by Belfastlive, a 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison following a burglary at a private home on Avoniel Road. Belfastlive reports that the defendant, Dylan Harding, was discovered hiding inside a wheelie bin in the victim's rear yard on January 5.

Upon being discovered, Harding jumped from the bin and pushed the 82-year-old homeowner to the ground, causing injuries to his head and hand. The intruder then entered the residence, locked the back door, and barricaded himself inside a utility bathroom using furniture. When police arrived at the scene, Harding resisted their attempts to enter the room and assaulted an officer before he was eventually detained. Harding later pleaded guilty to charges of burglary with intent to cause unlawful damage, common assault, and assault on police. The court heard that the defendant was suffering from a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the incident. Defence counsel described the behaviour as โ€œoutrageous,โ€ noting that the defendant expressed shame for his actions.

Ensure your property is well-lit and that all exterior bins or large objects are stored securely to prevent them from being used as concealment or climbing aids.
