According to an article published on 10 September 2025 by Belfastlive, a resident in Newcastle, County Down, returned home to find an alleged burglar asleep on his sofa. The incident, which took place at a property on Shan Shieve Court, was detailed during a hearing at Newtownards Magistrates Court.

Belfastlive reports that the householder discovered the front door open and the television on upon his return. The defendant, 26-year-old Michael McManus, was allegedly found with an open tin of alcohol taken from the victim's fridge. The court heard that the resident's wallet had been opened and a bank card was subsequently taken and used at a local shop. McManus, who faces a charge of burglary of a dwelling, claimed he believed he was at a neighbor's house.

The court was informed that the defendant has 40 previous convictions, including multiple entries for burglary. McManus has been remanded into custody. Always ensure your doors and windows are securely locked whenever you leave your home unattended.
