Supermarket robbery in Chester-le-Street

According to an article published on 1 April 2025 by Chroniclelive, a prolific shoplifter has been sentenced to 20 months in prison following a robbery at a Tesco supermarket in Chester-le-Street. The incident occurred on 15 January, when 36-year-old Kelly Traynor was confronted by store staff and security after attempting to steal meat.

Chroniclelive reports that when challenged by the manager and a security guard, Traynor produced a syringe and threatened to use it against them. She subsequently fled the premises with the stolen goods. Traynor, who had pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article, appeared at Durham Crown Court for sentencing. The court noted that the defendant had an extensive history of prior convictions, primarily for theft. The store manager reported being in fear for their safety throughout the encounter.

Businesses are encouraged to review their security protocols and staff training procedures to effectively manage confrontational situations involving shoplifting.
