Shop worker assaulted during robbery in Tynemouth
Assault reported at Tynemouth retail store
According to an article published on 19 March 2026 by Chroniclelive, a shop worker was assaulted during a robbery at a Sainsbury's Local on Broadway, Tynemouth. The incident occurred on 31 January, when Lewis Carlson and an accomplice entered the store and attempted to leave with £45 worth of confectionery without paying.
Chroniclelive reports that when a staff member attempted to intervene, Carlson turned violent. He grappled with the employee, pushed him into shelves, and threw large Toblerone bars at him, causing fleeting pain and discomfort. Following the altercation, the suspects fled the scene towards Cullercoats Metro station. The incident was captured on CCTV, leading to the identification and arrest of Carlson. He subsequently pleaded guilty to robbery at Newcastle Crown Court and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Business owners are encouraged to ensure staff are trained in non-confrontational de-escalation techniques when dealing with suspected shoplifters.
