Smash-and-Grab Burglar Targets Three South Loop Businesses in Quick Spree
A smash-and-grab burglar targeted three businesses at a South Loop strip mall early Saturday morning, March 8, 2025, leaving a trail of shattered glass and property damage. The Chicago Police Department reported that the suspect managed to enter at least one business and escape with cash from the register.
Sequence of the South Loop Break-Ins
According to police reports, the break-ins occurred within a tight window between 2:50 a.m. and 3:10 a.m. near the intersection of South Clark Street and South Archer Avenue. The suspect shattered the front windows of three adjacent commercial establishments. At the first business, the burglar gained entry but did not remove any merchandise before exiting through the rear. However, the suspect then entered a second business, where he successfully retrieved an undisclosed amount of cash directly from the cash register before fleeing the area.
Photos and video from the scene showed large rocks and shattered glass strewn across the sidewalk in front of the commercial storefronts as employees arrived to begin clean-up and repair efforts.
Search for the Suspect
No suspects are currently in custody, and Chicago Police Area Three detectives are leading the investigation. Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage from the businesses and surrounding intersections to obtain a description of the suspect and any getaway vehicles. Business owners in the South Loop are advised to review their security protocols, ensure that exterior lighting is fully functional, and clear cash registers of all currency at the close of business daily.
