Smash-and-Grab Thieves Loot JCPenney at Chicago's Ford City Mall, Stealing Up to $200,000 in Jewelry

Chicago police are searching for the perpetrators of a major commercial burglary after thieves targeted the JCPenney department store located at the Ford City Mall on the city's Southwest Side. The smash-and-grab heist occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, May 20, 2024, causing extensive property damage and a massive loss of merchandise.

Brazen Entry and Shattered Display Cases

Authorities responded to the store at 7600 S. Cicero Avenue in Chicago's West Lawn neighborhood around 4:30 a.m. Police reports indicate that the suspects forced entry by shattering the store's outer glass entrance doors. Once inside, the burglars moved swiftly to the jewelry section, where they used heavy tools to smash multiple glass display cases. The thieves grabbed dozens of items before fleeing the scene before officers arrived.

Massive Loot Estimated at $200,000

While JCPenney management and police investigators have not finalized the exact retail value of the stolen goods, initial reports from the scene suggest that the value of the missing jewelry could be as high as $200,000. In addition to the stolen merchandise, the store suffered thousands of dollars in property damage, including the ruined entrance and pulverized glass showcases.

Burglary Crews Targeting Department Stores

Detectives are currently reviewing security video from both inside the JCPenney and around the Ford City Mall parking lot. Investigators are looking into whether this incident is connected to a larger pattern of organized retail theft crews operating in the Chicago metropolitan area. No arrests have been made, and the suspect or suspects remain at large.
