Soda Theft Escalates as Robber Pepper-Sprays Security Guard in Missoula

MISSOULA, MT — A minor retail theft escalated into a violent robbery on February 19, 2026, when a suspect pepper-sprayed a security guard who attempted to intervene during a shoplifting attempt. The confrontation has raised concerns about the growing readiness of retail thieves to use force.

According to reports, the suspect was observed attempting to steal soda from a local retail store. When a security guard confronted the individual near the exit, the suspect pulled out a canister of pepper spray and discharged it directly into the guard's face. The suspect then fled the scene with the stolen items, leaving the guard temporarily blinded and in severe pain.

Medical personnel treated the security guard at the scene for chemical exposure. Police were dispatched immediately to search the area but were unable to locate the suspect. The Missoula Police Department is currently analyzing store security footage and asking the public to report any information related to this robbery.
