South End Restaurant Burglarized After Being Forced to Close by Fire
BOSTON, MA โ A prominent Asian gastropub in Bostonโs South End has suffered a double blow after being targeted by burglars while it was shuttered for repairs following a kitchen fire.
Banyan Bar + Refuge, located at 533 Tremont Street, has been closed to the public since a small kitchen fire broke out in late June 2025. While the team was busy working to restore the space and prepare for a reopening, intruders forced entry into the vacant establishment over the weekend of July 26โ27, 2025.
Ransacked Property and Stolen Assets
The burglary was discovered when restaurant manager Jim Paul arrived at the scene. He found the front door hanging open, cash registers heavily damaged, and items strewn across the dining area and counters. According to initial reports, the thieves stole electronic equipment, including a restaurant phone, and appeared to search for credit cards and other valuables left in the register drawers.
Adding to the challenges of the investigation, the restaurantโs security cameras were offline at the time of the break-in due to the ongoing repair work and electrical maintenance following the June fire.
A Growing Concern in the South End
This incident is part of a troubling series of recent commercial break-ins reported by business owners in the South End neighborhood. Business operators have expressed concern over security in the area, particularly for properties that are temporarily closed or unoccupied.
Despite the severe setback, Banyan Bar + Refuge management remains determined to recover. The restaurant is cooperating with Boston Police detectives, who are investigating the break-in, and the owners plan to finalize their post-fire renovations and welcome back patrons as soon as possible.
