Southport Riots: 12-Year-Old Boy Admits Role in Violent Disorder
A 12-year-old schoolboy has admitted a charge of violent disorder at Liverpool Youth Court following the widespread disturbances in Southport.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, appeared in court on Monday, August 12, 2024. He formally pleaded guilty to participating in the violent disorder that shook Southport on July 30, 2024.
The court heard that the boy was identified from video footage recorded during the unrest, which erupted near a local mosque. The riots resulted in injuries to dozens of police officers, damage to police vehicles, and the looting of nearby shops.
Due to the defendant's young age, the district judge adjourned the case to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by the Youth Offending Team. The boy was released on bail under strict conditions ahead of his sentencing hearing.
The prosecution is part of a nationwide crackdown and fast-tracked judicial process aimed at holding participants of the summer riots accountable. Dozens of individuals have already been sentenced to custodial terms for their roles in the disorder across Merseyside.
