Stolen ATM Discovered Abandoned Near Douglass Park Lagoon in Chicago
CHICAGO โ An investigation is underway on the city's West Side after a stolen automated teller machine (ATM) was found abandoned near a lagoon in Douglass Park. The discovery, made by local residents, highlights a growing trend of commercial burglaries targeting automated financial terminals across the metropolitan area.
According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding suspicious property in the park, located in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers located the heavily damaged ATM lying on the grass near the edge of the lagoon. Preliminary investigations indicate the machine had been forcibly extracted from a business in the vicinity before being hauled to the park, where it was vandalized, broken into, and subsequently ditched.
Detectives are currently analyzing physical evidence from the recovery site and reviewing surveillance feeds from security cameras positioned around Douglass Park. Investigators are trying to determine the exact point of origin of the ATM and whether this incident is linked to other recent commercial burglaries in the area.
Local community leaders have expressed concern over the incident, noting that public parks should remain safe, clean spaces for family recreation rather than dumping grounds for the remnants of organized commercial thefts. Area Central detectives are actively investigating the case and are asking anyone with information or dashboard camera footage from the area surrounding the park to come forward and contact the Chicago Police Department.
