A Victorville business owner is warning others about a sophisticated and highly destructive method of commercial burglary that cost her establishment $60,000 in a matter of seconds. The incident, which targeted the Snatch Me Up California Body Sculpting Spa, has highlighted a vulnerability in commercial merchant services and point-of-sale (POS) systems.

Thirteen-Second Break-In

The burglary occurred during the overnight hours when a thief broke into the spa by smashing a front window. Security footage shows the suspect entering the premises, heading directly to the counter, and stealing the physical POS terminal. The entire break-in took approximately 13 seconds. Recognizing the threat, the spa's owner immediately emptied the business's linked bank account to prevent the intruders from accessing the company's funds.

The Fraudulent Refund Exploit

Despite having no funds in the linked bank account, the business owner was shocked to discover that the thieves were still able to inflict massive financial damage. Using the stolen physical terminal, the perpetrators processed nearly $60,000 in fraudulent customer refunds. Because POS systems can process refunds directly to credit card networks before settling with the merchant's bank account, the processor authorized the transactions. The refunds were routed to prepaid credit cards, leaving the spa owner with a massive negative balance and liability to the merchant provider.

Calls for Industry Security Upgrades

Local law enforcement is investigating the heist, which is part of a growing national trend targeting POS terminals to exploit refund mechanisms. The spa owner and business advocates are calling on credit card processors and POS manufacturers to implement stronger security features, such as requiring PIN codes or biometric authentication to issue refunds, and allowing owners to instantly deactivate physical terminals remotely via mobile apps.
