Surrey Burglaries: Man Jailed for Using Trains to Raid Homes

A serial burglar who used trains to target homes across Surrey and Sussex has been jailed. The man, identified as Andrew Smith, was arrested after a series of burglaries that occurred between January and March 2023. Smith, 35, would travel by train to various locations in Surrey, including Guildford, Woking, and Farnham, to commit the burglaries. He would typically break into homes during the day while residents were out, stealing high-value items such as jewelry, electronics, and cash.

In one notable incident, Smith targeted a home in Guildford on February 15, 2023. He gained entry by breaking a window and stole items worth over £10,000, including a diamond ring, a gold necklace, and a laptop. Smith was eventually apprehended after a tip-off from a member of the public who recognized him from a CCTV image released by the police. He was found in possession of some of the stolen items and was charged with multiple counts of burglary.

During his sentencing at Guildford Crown Court, Smith was handed a five-year prison sentence. Detective Inspector John Harris, who led the investigation, appealed to the public for any further information on other potential victims or incidents related to Smith's activities. He also reminded residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
