Thieves Break Into Redcar Racecourse, Steal Vital Utility Vehicle Days Before Major Meeting
An investigation is underway after thieves broke into Redcar Racecourse in the early hours of the morning, stealing a vital all-terrain utility vehicle and causing damage to the race track rails just days before one of the venue's biggest showcase events of the year.
The targeted break-in occurred at approximately 3:30 AM on Saturday, May 23, 2026. According to racecourse officials, the perpetrators appeared to have planned the heist meticulously, disabling power to the racecourse's security alarm system before removing the vehicle from a secluded storage area out of sight from the main entrance.
In their escape from the grounds, the thieves drove the stolen vehicle—identified as a red Polaris all-terrain vehicle (ATV)—directly across the racing surface, causing significant physical damage to the running rails that line the track. The vehicle is a crucial piece of operational machinery for the course, used daily by groundskeepers for moving safety screens, transporting essential equipment, and navigating the vast racecourse territory.
Amy Fair, the General Manager of Redcar Racecourse, expressed deep frustration and dismay over the incident. She revealed that the cost of replacing the specialist utility vehicle is expected to exceed £12,000, presenting a substantial financial and operational headache just as the course was finalising preparations for the upcoming Zetland Gold Cup meeting.
"It is incredibly disappointing that individuals would target a local venue in this manner," Fair stated. "This vehicle is vital for our daily operations, particularly when preparing the track and facilities for major events. To have it taken, and to have our track damaged in the process just days before a major meeting, is a massive blow to the hardworking team here."
Cleveland Police have been informed and have launched an inquiry into the burglary. Racecourse management has made an urgent public appeal, asking local residents living near the racecourse boundaries to check their CCTV or smart doorbell footage for any suspicious activity around the 3:30 AM window. Despite the disruption and the damage caused to the trackside rails, management has reassured the public that scheduled racing, including the highly anticipated Zetland Gold Cup meeting, will go ahead as planned.
