Thieves Target Redcar Racecourse Ahead of Major Meeting
Vital Equipment Stolen Before Major Event
Officials at Redcar Racecourse have been left devastated following an overnight break-in that saw crucial equipment stolen just days ahead of one of their most important fixtures of the year. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 am on Saturday morning. Thieves managed to breach the perimeter of the racecourse and steal a highly valuable Polaris all-terrain vehicle (ATV). During their brazen escape, the thieves drove the stolen ATV directly up the main racing straight, causing significant damage to the trackside rails in the process.
Appeal for Witnesses and CCTV
The theft comes at a critical time, directly preceding the prestigious Zetland Gold Cup meeting scheduled for Monday. The stolen Polaris ATV is described as "integral" to the smooth running of race days, primarily used for transporting vital equipment around the extensive site. Redcarโs general manager, Amy Fair, expressed her frustration, stating: โIt is bitterly disappointing for this to happen. The team work so hard to prepare for racing and this is a real kick in the teeth.โ Fortunately, racing will proceed as planned, though a replacement vehicle had to be urgently sourced. Investigators are appealing for any residents whose homes back onto the racecourse track to review their private CCTV or doorbell cameras. Anyone with information regarding the break-in or the current whereabouts of the stolen ATV is urged to contact the racecourse office directly on 01642 484068.
Securing ATVs and Plant Machinery
All-terrain vehicles and small plant machinery are highly desirable to thieves due to their high value and utility. Organizations and individuals should prioritize security:
- Always remove the ignition keys when the vehicle is not in active use and store them securely in a locked key cabinet.
- Store ATVs and machinery inside a robust, securely locked garage, barn, or dedicated storage container whenever possible.
- Install aftermarket security devices such as heavy-duty steering locks, wheel clamps, or ground anchors.
- Fit a hidden, Thatcham-approved GPS tracking device to significantly increase the chances of recovery if the vehicle is stolen.
