The Bbc reports that the burglars, armed with a machete and a hammer, gained entry through a patio door while the victims were asleep. During the break-in, the offenders threatened the woman and her dog. The court heard that the men targeted the home after Lee Kinnell had scouted the property earlier that day under the pretext of selling sunglasses. The victims were forced to hand over money and sentimental valuables during the encounter.

All three men were sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court for their roles in the offence, with the judge noting the significant risk posed by the offenders. Rogers, Justice, and Kinnell received prison sentences for the burglary, which left the victims traumatised.
