Three Wanted Following Smash-and-Grab at South Side EZ Pawn

Law enforcement officials in San Antonio are asking for the public's assistance in identifying a trio of suspects following a brazen, destructive commercial robbery. According to the San Antonio Police Department, three men are currently wanted in connection with a "smash-and-grab" raid that targeted an EZ Pawn location on the city's South Side.

The Smash-and-Grab Tactic

While investigators have not publicly released a complete inventory of the stolen items, the nature of the crime highlights a growing trend in commercial burglaries. Unlike stealthy, overnight break-ins, a smash-and-grab robbery relies on speed, shock, and overwhelming physical force.

During these incidents, crews of multiple individuals forcefully enter a retail location—often while the business is open or immediately after closing—and use heavy tools like sledgehammers or crowbars to completely shatter reinforced glass display cases. Pawn shops, much like jewelry stores, are frequent targets for these types of crews because they heavily display high-value, highly portable items such as gold jewelry, luxury watches, and, critically, firearms.

By relying on sheer speed, the suspects aim to overwhelm store employees and grab as much valuable merchandise as possible in under 60 seconds, fleeing the scene long before police can physically respond to the initial alarm.

Defending Retail Displays

For pawn shop owners and retailers dealing in high-value merchandise, defending against a sudden, violent smash-and-grab requires a multi-layered approach to physical security:

  • Laminated Security Glass: Standard tempered glass, even when thick, shatters instantly when struck with a heavy tool. Display cases holding high-value merchandise must be constructed using multi-layered, laminated security glass (similar to a car windshield). While it will crack under repeated strikes, it holds its shape, denying immediate access and forcing suspects to spend precious time trying to chop through the laminate.
  • Nightly Vault Storage: The most effective defense against overnight or early morning smash-and-grabs is to completely empty the display cases. All jewelry, precious metals, and firearms must be physically removed from the retail floor at the end of every business day and secured in a heavy-duty, rated vault.
  • Access Control: Implement a strict, buzzed-entry system at the front door. This prevents a large group of masked individuals from rushing the storefront simultaneously.
